About Neurotoxins

Neurotoxin injections typically refer to medical procedures in which a neurotoxin, is injected into specific muscles or nerve pathways. The most well-known neurotoxin injection is Botox, which is used for cosmetic and therapeutic purposes. Botox injections temporarily paralyze or weaken muscles, which can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and treat certain medical conditions like muscle spasms, migraines, and excessive sweating.

Areas targeted:

Frown lines

Forehead creases

Brow lift

Chin dimpling

Crows feet

Gummy smile

Lip flip

TMJ treatment

Hyperhidrosis

What it is

How it works

The neurotoxin is injected into the targeted muscle or area.

  1. The neurotoxin disrupts the release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, which is responsible for signaling muscle contractions.

  2. Without acetylcholine signaling, the muscle becomes temporarily weakened or paralyzed.

  3. This results in the reduction of muscle activity in the treated area.

As a result, wrinkles or lines in the skin above the treated muscles appear smoother, and conditions like muscle spasms, chronic migraines, or excessive sweating are alleviated. The effects are temporary, typically lasting several months, and eventually, the body metabolizes the neurotoxin, allowing muscle function to return to normal.

What to expect

FAQs

  • It depends on several factors including: which area(s) you are trying to treat (11s, forehead, crow’s feet, etc), the strength of your facial muscles, and how deep your existing lines are. We recommend a complimentary consultation with our nurse injector to create a plan that is right for you.

  • Not really - it feels like a pinch! The needle is small, thin, and it goes by quickly to decrease the possibility of pain. No numbing agents are needed.

  • There’s virtually zero downtime with these treatments. Neurotoxins are often referred to as a “lunchtime procedure,” since most patients return directly to work or normal activity immediately. Some redness and swelling may occur at the injection sites, but it usually subsides within a few hours. Very rarely, patients may experience minor bruising.

  • Results last around 3-6 months, depending on the location of the treatment, your muscle activity and your body’s individual response.

  • While Botox and Dysport are both injectables (specifically, botulinum toxin injections) used to treat and prevent wrinkles, their chemical compositions are slightly different which can make one more effective than the other at specific injection sites. We recommend talking to our nurse injector to understand which product is the best fit for you!

  • Neurotoxin injections are very common, low risk procedures. Headache, minor bruising or swelling at the injection site are the most common but still rare side effects. As with any treatment, there are always risks which your nurse injector will walk you through prior to treatment.

  • Please don’t wear any makeup to your appointment. Our injectors need to be able to see your fine lines and wrinkles clearly.

People who are pregnant or nursing are not eligible for neurotoxin treatment.
